Lessons Learnt from the Russian Climb

I am a high-altitude mountaineer and recently, I summited Mt. Elbrus in Russia (5,642m), the highest in Europe.

After each expedition I introspect. So, what did I learn?

1. Preparation: Three months of intense workouts built confidence and helped immensely. Preparation prevents poor performance.

2. Confidence: I lacked self-belief on summit night. But the terrain got easier, I got better, and confidence surged back. Often confidence comes from success, not vice versa .

3. Team: We decided to invite only people we knew who were fit, positive, engaging and generous. Hence, team cohesion was high. Culture is critical for success.

4. Unity: On summit night, despite varying speeds we decided to stick together. We started and ended together, inspiring each other and sharing snacks (Snickers at 5,300m!) and drinks on the slopes. United we stand, divided we fall.

5. Leadership: We had an extremely competent Head Guide who knew each of us and we followed her without question. Listen to the experts!

6. Luck: Elbrus is notorious for high winds, extreme cold and rapidly changing weather. We were lucky and summited on a perfect day. Never discount luck.

7. Live: I decided initially to enjoy the journey, irrespective of the outcome.... Live in the moment!

All these lessons that I learnt on the climb can be aptly applied as lessons for exams, career and life!
